This time we have Hearts of Oak performing live, with support from Hall of Mirrors and The Scandal. Also appearing is The Weir – much loved hero of the South’s Hip-Hop scene. He’ll be playing a set heavy with his own stuff but with a couple of special occasion gems dropped in for good measure.

Playing around these lovely people are the usual suspect Pet Sounds DJs.

Once the bands have finished, downstairs will open, offering you the filthiest dance music/electro/indie your ears will be able to manage.

As always top value for your hard earned buck.

Spotlight on… ed209

To continue my ‘spotlight on…’ series, this time I’m going to focus on someone that has given me a lot of help over the last few years, passing on his wisdom of the music industry and offering me sage advice with regards to putting out music on your own.

This particular UK cat goes by the name of ed209 and he happens to lay down beats like his namesake lays down rapid high calibre explosive gun fire. This is not subtle, smooth production, this is heavy hitting beats and nerve shattering 80s synths that harp back to the sound of Hardnoise and old school UK hardcore.

We share a love of cinematic scores, and much of 209′s production drips with the adrenalin of those old 80s hyper-violent action flicks such as Robocop, Total Recall and Commando.

In 2003, he released his Superexstatic EP on his own Voodoo Rhythm Devil label. That record spawned the Exstatic Trilogy with Stillexstatic and Stayexstatic following over the next four years and featuring the likes of Cappo, Konny Kon and Eyezofman.

His most recent release is the Karma360 12″ single featuring Queensbridge legend Imam Thug and it’s truly a banger so don’t sleep.

Spotlight on… Theory

This time around, our spotlight swings back on to British soils and a gentleman who goes by the name Theory. Formally a local lad, he eventually jumped ship and relocated several miles down the coast where he’s been hard at work producing his own inimitable style of folk/blues/rap.

Intense as it is individual, Theory has a real talent for making words paint pictures and conjures images of a lost time. Somehow, it’s like he manages to write songs in sepia, each track encompassed by a dark, grainy vignette and a nagging sense of decay. The beats crunch, the cellos soar and the lyrics are hewn out of rotten wood and bent oxidised metal.

His last album was called Secrets Left and is currently available from his site, as are several other EPs, mixtapes and found sounds and hopefully I’ll be getting him involved on the next album…

The New Lab

Well, at long last the new studio I’ve been slowly putting together is pretty much complete. Apart from a bit of acoustic treatment for the walls and a decent condenser microphone, it’s all there and running. The TAC desk is finally able to be used to it’s maximum potential since for a while I was only able to use the first 6 channels…
I haven’t managed to come up with an interesting or whitty name for it yet so for now it’s just called The Studio… perhaps something will come to me at some point. It’s not exactly reaching the heady heights of Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios, Abbey Road or Phil Spector’s beloved GoldStar but it’s at the point where there’s nothing much I can’t do that I want to do.

Spotlight on… Goodword

Alright then, my new ‘Spotlight on…’ series is going to focus on artists and groups that influence and inspire me. Whether signed or unsigned, it’s mainly going to be about people I don’t think are well known enough, some of them you might have heard of before, hopefully some of them will be knew to you so you can take something away from it…

Up first is my man Goodword. Hailing from San Francisco California, Goodword’s put a lot of work in, extensively touring throughout America over the last few years and getting a large amount of college radio plays.
To date he’s released two albums, ‘I Got A Little Story’ and ‘Coulda Been That’ and I believe he’s working on a load of new material with his new collective BPos. Obviously Goodword contributed the track Dear God to my Skyhooks LP and there’s been some recent discussion regarding getting involved in my new project so I’ll keep you posted…

Updates & CD offers

As part of a new strategy to keep people a little better informed and updated on my news and progress, I have a few announcements today, first of all I have redesigned my website – theweir.co.uk – hopefully it’s abit easier to navigate and a bit more informative. I’ve also taken steps to make it easier for myself to update it and I promise I will do so a little more often from now on…
Secondly I have now set up a mailing list. This is something I have intended to do for a while now, you can sign up to it by going here – Mailing List
Obviously if you’re reading this you’ve already found my new blog and on top of all this I’m going to make an effort to update my myspace and facebook sites more often, especially now I’ve started a new project so I’ll be posting snippets and samples of new tracks and works in progress for you to hear…
I’d also like to take this oportunity to push the fact that I do still have CDs for sale. Currently the four EPs (Fandango!, Airborne, Devil May Care and Kid Icarus) are priced at £4 or $7 each, while the Skyhooks album is £5 or $9. As a special treat though, to celebrate the new blog, website and mailing list, I’m currently running an offer for all 5 CDs for £15 or $25!!
